MURFREESBORO, TN — Greg Tolliver, 41, confirmed Tuesday that he has been paying $16.49 per month for premium roadside assistance coverage on a vehicle he sold three years ago to a man named Dale, whose last name he does not remember.
The charge, originating from an auto club enrollment completed at a dealership in 2018, has appeared on Tolliver’s credit card statement every month for approximately 91 consecutive months under the line item “RDSD PLUS MEMBER SVC,” which Tolliver had assumed was a streaming service he couldn’t place.
“I kept meaning to look into that one,” Tolliver said, staring at a printed spreadsheet he had made in an effort to “get on top of things.” “I just figured if something bad happened, it would sort itself out.”
“Wherever Dale is, he’s had four years of unlimited towing and I have paid for every single mile of it.”
According to Tolliver’s own calculations, completed on the back of an envelope, he has paid a total of $1,500.59 in roadside coverage, covering a vehicle currently registered in Chattanooga to a Dale of unknown surname who has, records suggest, called for a jump start twice.
Michelle Crane, 38, a customer service representative at the auto club, confirmed the policy was active, the vehicle was not registered to Tolliver, and that cancellation would require a written request, a 30-day notice period, and the original dealership enrollment form, which Tolliver does not have.
“We can mail you a copy of the form,” Crane said, “though it does take four to six weeks.”
At press time, Tolliver had located what he believed was the enrollment form, which turned out to be a 2018 Applebee’s receipt.
