CANTON, OH — A Canton mother conducting a routine inventory of her chest freezer on Saturday discovered a zip-lock bag containing her son’s second-grade science project — a papier-mâché volcano decorated with dried macaroni — which she confirmed placing there in 2019 to “keep it safe” and has not thought about since.
The volcano, labeled Colton’s Volcanoe Project, Age 7 in marker that has partially transferred to the bag, was discovered behind a 2021 edamame purchase and what appears to be a sympathy lasagna from an unspecified bereavement. Colton Marsh is currently fourteen years old and has no memory of the project.
“I remember being very intentional about saving it,” said Lisa Marsh, 43, standing in front of the open freezer. “The freezer felt like the right choice at the time. It was a whole thing.”
“She told me she was going to put it somewhere special. I did not picture this.”
Colton Marsh, now a ninth-grader, said he vaguely recalled the project receiving a grade of “B or B-plus, maybe,” and confirmed he was “fine either way” with its current condition. Husband Derek Marsh, 45, said he had noticed the bag at least three times over the years and assumed it was “some kind of bread.”
At press time, Lisa Marsh had returned the volcano to the freezer, pushing it slightly further back, and told no one.
