BRIGHTON, TN — A marquee sign outside Calvary Ridge Baptist Church has displayed the message “FALL REVIVAL OCT 4-6 ALL WELCOME” since October 2021, despite the formation of a dedicated Sign and Communications Committee chartered specifically to update it.
The committee, which currently has six members and a rotating chairperson, held its eleventh meeting last Tuesday to discuss font options, theological tone, and whether seasonal messages constitute a formal doctrinal commitment. The revival, sources confirmed, concluded as scheduled four years ago with moderate attendance.
Committee chair Donna Faulkner, 61, said the group is “very close” to a final recommendation, pending resolution of a subcommittee report on letter-height readability standards for drivers traveling above 35 miles per hour.
“We want to get it right. A church sign is the first thing people see. That’s not nothing.”
“There’s also the question of punctuation,” added member Gary Whitmore, 58, a retired middle school English teacher who joined the committee in 2023 and has since introduced three separate motions regarding the Oxford comma. None has come to a vote.
Senior pastor Dale Houghton confirmed he submitted a proposed message in February 2022 — “He is Risen. Is your heart?” — which the committee tabled pending a brand consistency review that has not been scheduled.
The current sign is now weathered enough that the “C” in “OCT” is partially missing, rendering the date “OT 4-6,” which two passersby reportedly found spiritually adequate.
At press time, the committee had unanimously approved the purchase of a new box of replacement letters before selecting a message to put on the sign.
