GRAND RAPIDS, MI — The TikTok algorithm of Nathan Herring, 32, a claims adjuster and elder at Heritage Reformed Church, has reportedly concluded that he is both a committed five-point Calvinist and an avid Taylor Swift fan, a dual classification that Herring told reporters he “would like to dispute but cannot, in good conscience, deny.”
Herring’s For You page, which he showed to a reporter under condition of partial anonymity, alternates between nine-minute video sermons on unconditional election and fan-edited montages of Swift’s Eras Tour set to “All Too Well (10 Minute Version).” His average watch time on both categories exceeds 95%, a metric TikTok uses to reinforce content recommendations.
“I don’t know how it started,” Herring said. “One day I watched a video about limited atonement. Then I watched a clip of Taylor performing ‘Cruel Summer.’ The algorithm decided these two things were related. Theologically, I cannot explain the connection. Emotionally, I understand it completely.”
“The algorithm knows him better than I do, and we’ve been married for seven years. I didn’t know about the Taylor Swift thing until I saw him mouthing the words to ‘Anti-Hero’ while reading the Westminster Confession.”
His wife, Allison, 31, offered the above comment, adding that Nathan’s Spotify Wrapped last year listed his top genres as “Reformed Theology Lectures” and “Pop.”
Herring said he has attempted to reset his algorithm by watching videos about woodworking and fishing but reported that “within three swipes it always comes back to TULIP and Taylor.”
At press time, Herring had liked a video titled “The Doctrine of Perseverance of the Saints, Explained Using Taylor Swift Lyrics” and was composing a comment that began, “Finally, someone gets it.”
