MARIETTA, GA — Linda Colvin, 52, a longtime member of the Tuesday night women’s small group at Redeemer Bible Church, delivered a forty-five-minute prayer request during this week’s meeting that multiple attendees have since described as “the most thoroughly sourced piece of gossip in the history of organized religion.”
The request, which Colvin prefaced with “I just want us to lift this up,” concerned the marital difficulties of a couple who attend the church’s Saturday evening service and included, according to witnesses, first and last names, a timeline of events dating back to November, direct quotes from at least two text message exchanges, and a detailed floor plan of the couple’s kitchen “for context.”
“She said she wasn’t gossiping,” said group member Rhonda Yates, 48. “And then she showed us a screenshot. On her phone. During prayer request time. I didn’t know whether to close my eyes or take notes.”
“At one point she pulled up Google Maps to show us how close the husband’s new apartment is to a Buffalo Wild Wings. I still don’t know why that was relevant, but I haven’t stopped thinking about it.”
Small group leader Diane Cho, 44, offered the above comment, adding that she attempted to redirect the conversation twice but was overruled by what she described as “the group’s collective inability to stop listening.”
Colvin defended her approach in a follow-up phone call, telling reporters that “specific prayers require specific information” and that she was “simply equipping the group to intercede with precision.”
At press time, Colvin had texted the group a “Part Two update” with the subject line “URGENT: Pray Without Ceasing (Also, You Won’t Believe What Happened at Costco).”
